Letter submission: Trump magic show
MAGA propagandists like Elisabeth Hasselbeck, guest hosting on daytime TV’s The View, are skilled slight-of-hand artists.
When Americans talk about the ICE killings of Alex Pretti and Rene Nicole Good, MAGA is quick to bring up a half dozen names of American citizens killed by illegal immigrants. Fair enough. But not good enough.
In fact, there are tens of thousands of Americans killed by our own American citizens each year. MAGA is singling out a handful of killings by immigrants as if they outweigh all these others. They clearly do not. In fact, studies show immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than native-born Americans.
Not only that, but MAGA propagandists regularly fail to mention the good reasons the great majority of immigrants have for coming to America, like economic opportunity and deliverance from repression at home. When these reasons are not mentioned, the Trump anti-immigrant program becomes a magic show that disappears the big facts of life and magnifies a few of the little facts of life. This is not a show I want to spend my paycheck going to see.
In fact, the Trump program is a racist program where brown-skinned folks are demonized while many white-skin felons are given immunity from prosecution because they are rich and white. Can you name a banker who defrauded homebuyers in the 2007 subprime mortgage scandal that ever spent any time behind bars?
