Oswego Hospital’s new Orthopedic Surgeon Shawn Mills, MD, will present an Ask The Doctor Forum on joint replacement on Thursday, September 15th in the lower level conference room of the Oswego Health Services Center, which is adjacent to the hospital.
An accomplished orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Mills, has been board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery since 2001. He has been performing a variety of orthopedic procedures for more than 15 years.
The Ask the Doctor forum is an opportunity for the public to meet Dr. Mills and learn more about his expertise in joint replacement therapy for advanced arthritis. “I am looking forward to introducing myself to the community and to developing a new level of orthopedic services at Oswego Hospital,” Dr. Mills said.
Dr. Mills is experienced in providing total hip and knee replacements, as well as
shoulder replacements. Among the procedures Dr. Mills will perform are arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder, meniscal tears and ligament injuries, impingement and rotator cuff tears, carpal tunnel surgery, cubital tunnel surgery, tendon repairs or reconstructions for tendon ruptures of the Achilles heel and biceps.
Dr. Mills is a long standing proponent and practitioner of Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) procedures, which involve specialized orthopedic equipment and training.
MIS procedures often allow the orthopedic surgeon to perform major surgical procedures while minimizing the injury to muscle and tendons, thereby decreasing the pain and bleeding associated historically with joint replacement surgeries. These procedures not only decrease the pain associated with joint replacements, but also allow for a faster recovery, and quicker return to normal daily life when compared to traditional joint replacements.
Dr. Mills’ practice, Advanced Orthopedic Group, is located in suite 270 of the Health Services Center, which is adjacent to Oswego Hospital. In addition to his practice, he will take emergency on-call at Oswego Hospital, making himself available to perform trauma and reconstructive surgery.
Dr. Mills’ patients will find that any required medical images, lab tests or physical therapy can be conveniently provided at either the Oswego Health Services Center or Oswego Hospital. In addition, The Manor at Seneca Hill offers comprehensive rehabilitation services following surgery.
The orthopedic surgeon most recently practiced at Saint Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, Massachusetts. He also served as director of orthopedic rehabilitation at both the Royal Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Falmouth, MA, and at the Catholic Memorial Home and Rehabilitation Center in Fall River, MA.
Prior to entering his clinical practice of orthopedic surgery, Dr. Mills completed his residency training in orthopedic surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center (UMMC). He also completed fellowship training in emergency medicine and critical care in addition to his surgical internship, while at UMMC.
The Ask The Doctor Forum is a free presentation sponsored by the Oswego Health Community Development Office. The Ask The Doctor Forum is designed to create an open dialogue between health care providers/professionals and interested members of the greater Oswego County community.
