Oswego AmeriCorps Begins its 20th Year

OSWEGO COUNTY – Oswego AmeriCorps recently welcomed a new class of AmeriCorps members who pledged to “Get Things Done” for Oswego County.

They joined the one million men and women who have taken the same pledge since AmeriCorps’ inception in 1994.

“I am proud to welcome these new members into the national service family; they are the heart of everything we do,” said Wendy Spencer, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency that administers AmeriCorps. “They join a network of more than one million men and women who have joined AmeriCorps to make our country stronger. ‘Thanks-A-Million’ to all the AmeriCorps members for their dedication and we thank our outstanding partners who make their service possible.”

This new group of local members will serve various sites around the county, including Leighton Elementary and Oswego Community Christian schools in Oswego; Lanigan and Fairgrieve elementary schools in Fulton; Hannibal High School; and Pulaski Public Library.

Oswego AmeriCorps began in 1997 and its members provide fitness and nutrition activities for youth, assist economically disadvantaged adults with housing services, and manage volunteers.

During their service, they expand their opportunities, gain skills and experience to jump start their careers, and earn education awards for their service.

AmeriCorps positions are still available in Oswego County.

These openings are at schools, recreation programs, libraries and human service agencies.

Positions are for 300-, 450- and 900-hour terms of service.

Members receive a minimal living allowance while serving in the program and an education award at the completion of their term.

The education award can be used for tuition and student loans at qualifying institutions.
