Oswego AmeriCorps Is Looking for Recent College Graduates

The Oswego AmeriCorps Program is currently accepting applications for 900-hour positions at sites around Oswego County.

“This is a great opportunity for recent college graduates who are looking for a paid position and can benefit from the education award to pay off student loans,” said Kathleen Andolina, AmeriCorps program coordinator at the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau.

AmeriCorps is a national service program that addresses local needs. AmeriCorps members in Oswego County work with youth by providing mentoring, fitness activities or nutrition education. Current openings are in the Oswego, Mexico and Parish areas. Applicants should have experience working with youth.

AmeriCorps members gain valuable experience that translates directly into job experience. They learn teamwork, communication, responsibility, and other essential skills. Many members find their AmeriCorps term of service provides them with more experience and skills than they would have gotten in traditional employment.

“In addition to the tremendous reward that comes from helping others, AmeriCorps members receive a modest living allowance,” said Andolina.

The 900-hour members receive a total of $6,399, divided into bi-weekly pay checks. At the completion of their term of service, members earn an education award of $2,775 to help pay for college, graduate school or to pay back qualified loans.

Individuals who are serving in AmeriCorps may be eligible to temporarily postpone the repayment of their qualified student loans through loan forbearance. If a member successfully completes a term of service, the National Service trust will pay all or a portion of the interest that accrued on loans in forbearance through AmeriCorps.
