Oswego Bookmobile Thanks Local Businesses For Donations

OSWEGO – Driving Books Home, Oswego’s Bookmobile, thanks seven local businesses that recently donated funds to support its literacy program.

Oswego Bookmobile recently received the following donations: Pathfinder Bank and Oswego County Federal Credit Union donated $1,000 each. C’s Farm Market donated $500, as did Scriba Electric and Warner Physical Therapy.

Donating $100 each are Riverview Wellness Inc. and Amdursky, Pelkey, Fennell, and Wallen.

It is evident from these donations that the Oswego community appreciates the efforts of Oswego Bookmobile to help children avoid regression in their reading skills during the summer.

With the support of its donors, Oswego Bookmobile rolls into Oswego neighborhoods to promote reading for seven weeks during summer vacation.

At every stop, the bookmobile gives a free book and a snack to each child under the age of 18 in the Oswego community.

Literacy specialists, an AmeriCorps volunteer coordinator, a SUNY Oswego graduate assistant, and volunteers help children select books at their independent reading level, books that children can keep to build their own personal libraries in their homes.

Funds to purchase new books come from donations given by local businesses, individual donors and grant giving organizations.

The bookmobile also attends Movie in the Park nights, sponsored by Oswego County Federal Credit Union and gives free books to children before the movies start.

In addition, the bookmobile parks at Oswego Farmers’ Markets several times in the summer, and is at the Children’s Park during Harborfest, to distribute books.

The bookmobile reading program targets neighborhoods in the Oswego City School District where children are likely not to have access to books during summer months.

Research shows that children who do not read during the summer experience “summer slide,” a loss of reading skills.

This results in a widening of the learning gap between students who read during the summer and those who don’t.

The bookmobile is grateful to all of the donors, whether their contribution is large or small.

Every contribution helps to provide a child with a free book.

The bookmobile also expresses its appreciation to the partners: Oswego City School District, SUNY Oswego, Oswego Public Library and to all of our individual, corporate and nonprofit donors and grant givers who make Driving Books Home possible.
