Oswego, NY – After a successful regular season, the Oswego Clearview Squirt hockey team traveled to Niagara Falls this past weekend to compete in the annual Gene Harrington Falls Classic Hockey Tournament.
The Oswego Squirts were competitive throughout the tourney, allowing only two goals in three games, but losing a head-to-head tiebreaker that would have slated them in the tournament championship.
“The kids really played great the entire weekend and I was proud of how they stood up against some tough competition from throughout the Northeastern US and Canada,” said Oswego Head Coach Eric Koproski.
The Clearview squad tied the Buffalo Shamrocks 1-1; shutout Palmyra 3-0; and lost a tough 1-0 game against West London, Ontario, Canada.
In the first matchup against Buffalo, it all came down to the third period. After a standstill for two periods, it was Oswego who struck first in the third with a goal by Nick Burnett at the 8:38 mark. Andrew Noyes and Bryson Bush added the assists.
The Shamrocks then came back with a goal of their own at 6:36 left in the period to end the game in a 1-1 tie.
The following day, Oswego took on Palmyra and emerged with a 3-0 win, with Tyler Wallace picking up his sixth shutout victory for Clearview.
Burnett added two more goals for Oswego, one unassisted in the second period and the other assisted by Spencer Stepien in the third. Alex Koproski added the third reinforcing goal with 1:41 left in the game.
“It was a great victory for the whole team,” said Koproski, “but we are especially proud of the work done on defense to earn the shutout.”
Oswego took on West London later that afternoon, and after a scoreless first period, West London got on the board with a goal at the 2:47 mark of the second period. Despite numerous opportunities, Oswego couldn’t take advantage of them and lost the contest 1-0.
“Our coaches are really proud of the team’s performance in the tournament,” said Koproski. “And, I can’t say enough about Tyler Wallace and his efforts in goal. While the kids were disappointed with the tourney outcome, they know the played hard and gave a strong effort.”
The Oswego Clearview Squirts will conclude their season with the Snowbelt League Jam Tournament at SUNY Morrisville.
