Oswego, NY – The Oswego Clearview Squirt Hockey team split a pair of games over the weekend at Crisafulli Rink in Oswego, according to Oswego Head Coach Eric Koproski.
Oswego (2-1 record) captured a 2-1 win over visiting Lysander on Saturday, and then lost a tough contest the following day against Skaneateles 3-2.
“These games really showed the character of these kids,” said Koproski. “ They battled through some short handed situations, scrapped both days, and really played hard every minute.”
“I was really proud of their effort throughout the weekend,” he added.
In the Lysander game, Oswego fell behind 1-0 at the 4:20 mark of the second period, before Oswego defenseman Nick Burnett took over in the third. After two Oswego penalties put them in a three on five shorthanded situation Burnett went coast to coast and lifted a shot over the Lysander net minder to tie the game at 1-1. With just over one minute left in the game Burnett then took a pass from Oswego’s Jack Stephens and scored the decisive goal to make it 2-1. Goalie Tyler Wallace, who ended up with 14 saves, made several key stops in the final minute to capture the win.
On Sunday, Oswego and Skaneateles played a tough, back and forth game throughout. The visiting Lakers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead at 10:06 in the first period. After a scoreless first period for Oswego, Clearview Squirt forward Andrew Noyes tied it early in the second period off assists from Stephens and Alex Koproski. Skaneateles would add another just minutes later to once again take a 2-1 lead. In the third period, Oswego’s Burnett would net his third goal of the weekend to tie it at two apiece, before Skaneateles quickly made it 3-2 at the 10:34 mark.
According to Koproski, Oswego continued to press Skaneateles throughout the remaining 10 minutes of the game, but just could not get the tying goal.
Wallace was once again spectacular in goal registering 26 saves, despite the loss.
In addition to those who tallied points over the weekend, Koproski praised the overall efforts of Spencer Stepien, Jeremy Susino, Patrick Galvin, Lane Phillips, Bryson Bush, Isaiah Raby, Mason Bricker, and Wallace.
“This was an absolute team effort this past weekend,” added Koproski. “And, that is what is truly defining us early in the season.”
