OSWEGO – The Oswego County Health Department will conduct its annual public health emergency preparedness drill on Wednesday, March 28.
The health clinic, located at 70 Bunner St., Oswego, will be open from 4 to 6 p.m. and the public is invited to participate in this practice exercise.
No actual vaccinations or medicines will be given.
“This drill tests the ability of our department to protect county residents in the event of a real public health emergency,” said Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang. “We will demonstrate the efficient set-up of a medical clinic, registration of volunteer participants, medical screening process to determine accurate dosage for each individual, and simulate giving vaccines to men, women, and children.”
He added, “This is also a great opportunity for people to get involved, learn more about the county health department, and see first-hand some of the work we do in the community.”
People and families of all ages and abilities are asked to volunteer as patients to help with this event.
Service dogs will be permitted, and language translation services will be available.
Students who are interested in earning community service hours are encouraged to participate.
Health department staff estimates that it will take approximately 10 minutes for each person to go through the process from registration to vaccine simulation.
People can volunteer for a specific time or for the whole event.
Parking will be in the lot directly in front of the health department complex.
The entrance will be easily marked.

Walk-ins are welcome to participate by registering on site that day.
Every year, county public health departments across the state are required to conduct drills to practice their response to public health emergencies.
The exercises are developed by the New York State Department of Health and evaluated to identify the strengths and challenges of each department.
