Oswego Fire Department To Offer Training

OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego Fire Department announces the following EMS course offerings for 2015:

Emergency Medical Technician – January 27 through June 18.

The EMT is the backbone, and in many cases the primary provider, of many EMS systems.  The EMT is also widely used across the country in industrial settings and in athletic training or coaching.  This level of certification is required before entering into any advanced EMS program and is the minimum level of care for all ambulance services.

The EMT program will be conducted on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the East Side Fire Station and the tuition is $775. Students who are active members of an agency that provides EMS to the public are eligible to have their tuition paid by the New York State Department of Health upon successful completion of the program. Minimum class size is 14 students.

In addition to the Original EMT course, we also offer a Refresher program for those already certified providers looking to maintain their certification or for past providers who would like to get it back. Tuition for the Refresher is $425 and just like the original, students who are active members of an agency that provides EMS to the public are eligible to have their tuition paid by the New York State Department of Health upon successful completion of the program.

ALS CME Core Hours – February 28 through April 15.

This course is for currently advanced providers in need of continuing education hours. This course is scheduled for six consecutive 8-hour Saturdays with one additional optional day for the providers’ required skills verification.

Tuition for this course is tentative, as it will be determined by the number of students enrolled. Minimum class size is 5 students.

Advanced EMT and Critical Care Technician – August 2015 through August 2016.

Recently adopted by the Department of Health from the National Education Standards, the Oswego Fire Department is proud to offer the new Advanced EMT. In addition to the skills learned at the EMT level, the AEMT is additionally trained in advanced airway procedures, IV access and medication administration. In addition, the Critical Care Technician is trained in cardiac therapies, advanced procedures for pediatrics and much more.

The Oswego Fire Department offers these courses as modules so students have the option of obtaining either the AEMT or both the AEMT and CCT certifications. Tuition for the AEMT is $625 and for the AEMT and CCT combined is $1,925. Students who are active members of an agency that provides advanced-level EMS to the public are eligible to have their tuition partially paid by the New York State Department of Health upon successful completion of the program. Minimum class size is 12 students.

As always, the Oswego Fire Department will continue to offer certification in CPR and First Aid to any member of the public wishing to obtain it.
