Oswego Harborfest Seeks More ‘Friends of the Festival’

OSWEGO – There is a substantial amount of work that goes on behind-the-scenes to make the annual Oswego Harborfest celebration become a reality.

Oswego Harborfest is one of the largest admission free music festivals in the nation.

However, not only is Harborfest packed with numerous varieties of music, but highlights also include the spectacular Entergy sponsors world-class Grucci fireworks display as well as the Novelis Family Park which provides unique experiences for youngsters and their families.

Once again this year Oswego Harborfest will be celebrated during the last weekend of July with festivities commencing on Thursday July 23 and winding down late Sunday afternoon July 26.

This regional event is brought together through the cooperative efforts of business, industry, municipalities, community not-for-profit organizations and the support of families and individuals.

The behind-the-scenes organization has changed considerably over the years, but the festival continues to be a “must see” destination for thousands of New York State families.

Executive Director Doug Buske said, “Harborfest is unique in that is organized by five part time employees, a volunteer board of directors and is successful because of the tremendous cooperative partnership between the city, county, law enforcement, department of public works, businesses, industry as well as the many families and individuals . Without the generous support of our ‘Business Partner Members’ and ’Friends of the Festival’ members,  Harborfest would not be possible.”

Harborfest may not be opening until late July, but this is a very important time of year for the organizational team.

Carol Dillabough has been actively lining up sponsorships with businesses while individual memberships are being coordinated by Cindy Loughrey.

Loughrey said, “We have mailed out more than 500 letters seeking ‘Friends of the Festival’ contributions and thus far many area residents have supported Harborfest with generous contributions, but I know we have not reached out to everyone.“

Harborfest “Friends of the Festival” support comes at many levels, but any contribution to support this annual festival area appreciated.

Loughrey continued, “We like to recognize the generous support that is provided by our friends and we are currently organizing the annual program and the names of our friends will be listed there as well as on our website. So this is a perfect time to contribute to the support of Harborfest.”

There are various levels for donor contributions including $25 (name is listed in Harborfest program and on website), $50 (listing as well as a Harborfest program), $100 (all of the previous as well as a transportation button), and $200 (all of the above as well as a T-shirt).

Loughrey said, “There are various levels, but any support is appreciated as we continue our efforts to enhance Harborfest.”

To become a “Friend of the Festival” please send a check or money order to Oswego Harborfest, in care of Cindy, 41 Lake St., Oswego, NY.

Loughrey said, ”We will be conducting another mailing in the next couple of weeks in hopes of reaching out to invite area residents, families and individuals to become a ‘Friend of the Festival.’ It is my hope that everyone who enjoys Harborfest will come aboard as a friend and we appreciated your support.”
