OSWEGO, NY – Oswego Health welcomes physicians from Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists (SOS), who will be performing surgeries in Oswego Hospital’s surgery center.
Along with this advanced care, SOS and Oswego Health physician assistants will provide office visits in suite 280 of the Oswego Health Services Center.
The SOS physicians in collaboration with Oswego Health’s own orthopedic team will perform total joint surgeries, as well as surgical procedures for foot and ankle and hand/upper extremity issues.
In addition, the physicians will offer a wide range of sports medicine therapies for both the serious athlete and weekend warrior.
I. Michael Vella, MD
Coordinating the SOS team at Oswego Health is Dr. Vella is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in joint replacement surgery, sports medicine and fracture care.
Dr. Vella earned his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical Center.
He fulfilled his orthopedic residency training at Rhode Island Hospital, where he served as Assistant Resident and then Chief Resident.
Dr. Vella completed his Fellowship at Harvard Medical School, in adult reconstructive surgery and returned to Upstate New York to practice and raise a family.

Naven Duggal, MD
Dr. Duggal is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of foot and ankle problems, as well as the correction of deformities involving the foot, ankle and knee.
Prior to joining SOS, Dr. Duggal was the Chief of the Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Service at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
Dr. Duggal completed his orthopedic residency training at the University of Western Ontario, which is part of the London Health Sciences Centre, located in Canada.
Dr. Duggal completed two orthopedic fellowship trainings at the Sydney Orthopedic Arthritis & Sports Medicine, in Sydney, Australia, and at the University of Toronto, St. Michaels Hospital, Toronto, Canada.
Nathan Everding, MD
Dr. Nathan Everding is a fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of upper extremity injuries, arthritis, tendinopathies, rotator cuff disorders, and nerve compression syndromes.
In particular, his interests include shoulder and elbow joint replacement surgery.
Dr. Everding earned his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed his orthopedic residency training at Boston University’s Medical Center.
His orthopedic fellowship training in shoulder and elbow surgery were completed at Holy Cross Orthopedic Institute, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., while his hand and upper extremity fellowship was at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Metro Health Medical Center in Cleveland Ohio.
Seth Greenky, MD
Dr. Greenky is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon who specializes in adult reconstruction, including total joint replacement, sports injuries and fracture care.
He received his medical degree from SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse and his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University.
J. Alan Lemley, MD
Dr. Alan Lemley specializes in surgery of the hand and wrist.
He earned his medical degree with honors at Upstate Medical University, and his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College in 1999.
He completed his surgical internship and wrist and hand pain residency at the West Virginia University Department of Orthopedics, where he had the distinction of being named resident teacher of the year.
Dr. Lemley is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of foot and ankle injuries.
He received his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical Center.
Dr. Lemley completed his residency training at West Virginia University, Morgantown, W.Va., and his orthopedic fellowship at the Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Center, Columbus, Ohio.
Dr. Lemley is one of only two fellowship trained foot and ankle orthopedic specialists in the Syracuse area.
Bradley Raphael, MD
Dr. Bradley Raphael is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in arthroscopic and ligament reconstructive surgery of the shoulder, elbow, knee, and ankle.
He is a team Physician for Syracuse University. Dr. Raphael is a graduate of Yale University School of Medicine and completed his Orthopedic residency at Hospital for Special Surgery at Cornell-Weill Medical School in New York City.
He has also completed a sports medicine fellowship at the prestigious Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles.
Irving Raphael MD
Dr. Irving Raphael is a board-certified, orthopedic surgeon specializing in arthroscopic and ligament reconstructive surgery of the shoulder, hip, knee, and ankle.
He has served as the head team physician for Syracuse University for more than 20 years, along with numerous area high schools.
Dr. Raphael is a graduate of Yale University Medical School, in New Haven Conn., and completed his orthopedic residency training at Upstate Medical Center.
L. Ryan Smart, MD
Dr. Smart is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon, who is extensively trained in treating adult and pediatric sports injuries including treatment and surgical repair of injuries of the shoulder, knee, hip and elbow.
He received his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School, and his bachelor’s degree from Cornell University.

John Ayers, MD
Dr. Ayres earned his doctor of medicine degree from New York Medical College in New York City.
He completed his surgical internship at Dartmouth’s Mary Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover, N.H., and his orthopedic surgical residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
He is a board certified orthopedic surgeon with more than 30 years of orthopedic experience.
Jerod Hines, MD
Dr. Hines is a graduate of the University of Utah’s School of Medicine, located in Salt Lake City.
He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery and his fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine at McGill University Health Centre, located in Montreal, Quebec.
While completing his medical training, Dr. Hines earned several awards and honors, including the Albert Butler Award in orthopedics twice, allowing him to conduct research in his field of specialty.
A native of Idaho, he earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of Idaho.
His interest in medicine was sparked while serving in the U.S. Navy as a hospital corpsman.
