OSWEGO – More than a reenactment, Rosemary Nesbitt’s award-winning play “The Great Rope” will immerse the audience into the action this weekend for one performance only, on August 2 at 6 p.m.
Attendees, seated on lawn chairs and blankets, will see the fort come to life with the re-telling of this outdoor historical event as seen through the eyes of a 12-year-old boy and his friends.
Using buildings, landings and moors overlooking the historic Fort Ontario parade grounds, audience members will feel like part of the action as characters run among the crowd and deliver scenes 360 degrees around them on balconies, hilltops, doorways and overhangs.
“Rosemary Nesbitt always wanted to present her play right here on the parade grounds,” said producer Mercedes Niess. “We’re delighted to finally do that with the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Oswego. This is just slightly different than a reenactment in that characters deliver dialogue and create a sense of the event happening in real time for the people involved.”
“Fort Ontario director Paul Lear and his staff have been invaluable in making Rosemary’s dream come true with assistance from costumes to props to building access, soldiers, accurate research and anything else needed,” Niess added. “It is an unprecedented outdoor amphitheatre experience and we’re excited to bringit to the Oswego community through this collaborative effort.”
The Great Rope Play is sponsored by the Richard S. Shineman Foundation, CNY Arts, NBT Bank, Wayne Drugs, Oswego Lions, Stewarts Shops, Elks Lodge #271 and Oswego Printing.
Tickets are available at river’s end bookstore and Man in the Moon Candies (in Oswego), Arts in the Heart Gallery in Fulton, and the H. Lee White Marine Museum and Fort Ontario Historic Site (both in Oswego).
Tickets are $5 for adults, $2 for teens and age 12 and under are free.
Tickets may also be purchased at the door.
The audience is encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for open seating.
