Oswego School Board OKs New Track Coach

OSWEGO, NY – The long-running saga of who would be the head coach for the OHS Boys’ Varsity Track Team was resolved at Tuesday night’s Oswego School Board meeting.

The board voted 4-2-1 to appoint Jeff Gordon to the position.

His stipend will be $6,453.

Voting yes were Tom DeCastro, Sam Tripp, Lynda Sereno and Mike McLaughlin. Casting no votes were Kathleen Allen and John Dunsmoor. Heather DelConte abstained.

For weeks, the board wrangled with the position. A veteran coach had been proposed for the job, but his salary of nearly $11,000, raised some eyebrows on the board and in the community.

At its last meeting, the board approved re-posting the job opening because they had a problem with the salary – not the coach.

In a separate vote Tuesday night, the board also approved: Track Varsity Head Coach (Girls), Megan Smith at a stipend of $6,202; Track Varsity Assistant Coach (Girls), Catherine Celeste at a stipend of $4,865; Lacrosse Junior Varsity Head Coach (Boys), Daniel Witmer at a stipend of $5,169; and Lacrosse Modified Assistant Coach (Girls) Michael Howard at a stipend of $4,257

And, the board approved Gordon’s and Smith’s resignation from their previous coaching appointments, Track Varsity Head Coach (Girls) and Track Varsity Assistant Coach (Girls), respectively.
