OSWEGO, NY – The un-official start to the 2013 Oswego Speedway racing season is set for March 9-10 with the annual Gater Racing News Motorsports Expo at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse.
Oswego Speedway will once again feature a multi-car display at the Expo, along with three Supermodified simulators for fans to take a set of laps at the famed ‘Steel Palace.’
“It’s always a great weekend at the Gater Racing News Motorsports Expo,” said Oswego Speedway public relations specialist Dan Kapuscinski. “Annually, this event serves as the beginning of a new year in racing and it is exciting to get back together with the racing family and get pumped up for the new year that lies ahead. We’re proud to have three racecars scheduled to appear in our booth this season along with Dave Hale’s street legal Supermodified, the Supermodified simulators, as well as the Oswego Kartway.”
One of the Speedway speedsters scheduled to appear at the Expo is the Lighthouse Lanes No. 50 Novelis Supermodified of Dave Gruel. Gruel, who is the defending champion of the Burke’s Home Centers/Fleet Pride King of Wings at Oswego, now has a total of three Supermodified wins at the Speedway.
The 2010 Novelis Supermodified Rookie of the Year has earned at least one Supermodified victory at the Speedway in each of his first three seasons behind the wheel.
Joining Gruel will be defending Pathfinder Bank SBS track champion Kreig Heroth, with the Soucy Racing No. 04 small block machine. With two main event wins to end the 2012 season at Oswego, Heroth managed to stage a late rally on 2011 champion Mike Bond and earn his first career track title.
Heroth has collected a total of five SBS feature victories since winning Rookie of the Year honors in 2008 and hopes to be the first repeat SBS champion since Russ Brown won three consecutive titles from 2005-2007.
The third racer scheduled to be on hand is the defending Mr. Pathfinder Bank SBS champion AJ Bernys, with his Byrne Dairy No. 24 SBS mount. Bernys, an SBS rookie in 2010, made 2012 his best season yet as he drove to victory lane for the first time in the second biggest race of the season for the small block division. The young Oswego driver capped his banner year 10th in points in 2012 with three top five finishes, six top ten finishes, and a total of three heat race victories.
The final machine currently slated to be on hand is the Dave Hale street legal ‘Steel Palace’ Supermodified. The beautiful and unique hot rod has been featured at the Speedway on multiple occasions, and will be available for an up close look yet again at the Expo.
Plans are also in place to try and have the popular Canale Insurance 2-Seat Supermodified on display as well, which is currently being revamped by former Speedway champion Steve Gioia Jr. Should all of the parts and pieces fall into place according to plan, be ready for the new look ride along Supermodified.
One of the more popular things to do at the Gater Racing News Expo each season is to collect one of the many racing schedules available for the coming year, and once again Mitchell’s Speedway Press has developed Oswego’s schedule flyer for 2013. Be sure to stop by the Speedway booth to pick one up as well as browse the many merchandise selections available and even purchase a copy of Inside Oswego Speedway on DVD.
