The Oswego State Mens Club Hockey team ended the first semester with a win and a loss in NECHL action.
The Lakers hosted the Cortland Red Dragons on Dec. 12 and came away with an exciting 4-3 win. This was the first meeting this year between the two teams. Oswego scored the only goal of the first period when Ryan Grant found the back of the net on a James Hollowell pass late in the period. The second period saw Cortland scoring twice, but Oswego’s Mike Weronski answered with a shot from the blue line. Oswego scored twice in the third period as both Mike Renick and DJ Mazzoni put the puck past the Cortland goaltender. Assisting on the Laker goals were Justin Smith and Chris Timmons. Aaron Frohm had 49 saves for Oswego.
The following afternoon, Oswego traveled to Syracuse to face the Orangemen. The action was up and down the ice and both goaltenders were stellar in the net as the first goal of the game didn’t happen until late in the second period. Oswego’s only goal was scored by freshman Dillon Tamer and the Lakers were defeated by Syracuse 4-1. Senior Mike Reid was very steady in the net as he made 51 saves for Oswego.
The team returns to campus on January 16- a week early- to prepare for the second half of their season. They travel to Cortland on Friday, Jan. 20 for a rematch with Cortland at 7:00 and then they travel to the Utica Aud to face off against MVCC in a non-league contest.
The Lakers are a part of the NECHL with Rutgers, St. Bonaventure, Binghamton, Cornell, Cortland, Ithaca and Syracuse. They will be welcoming Niagara, RIT and U. Buffalo to the league next year. With those teams joining the league, the NECHL will be the largest D1 league in the ACHA.
Oswego is sponsored by the Student Association of Oswego State University, Tavern on the Lock Restaurant, Uniforms, Etc., Clean Check Hockey, Bags for Sports, Damn Good T-Shirts and Battle Axe Hockey.
