ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Oswego State field hockey team (5-10) exploded for three goals in just over a two-minute span to lift the Lakers over Nazareth (6-11), 3-2, on Tuesday afternoon.
Oswego State survived a second half Golden Flyer charge to preserve the victory.
Oswego State earned a series of four penalty corners near the midway point of the first half before Jess Felice (Sr., Endicott, N.Y.) capitalized on the opportunities in the 15th minute. In the 16th minute, Rachel Johnston (Jr., Cayuga, N.Y.) doubled the lead with her first goal of the season after receiving a pass from Courtney Collins (So., Fairport, N.Y.). Taylor Stein (Sr., Endwell, N.Y.) followed shortly with her fifth marker of the year to put Oswego State ahead 3-0. Alyssa Hare (Sr., Middleport, N.Y.) was credited with an assist on the play that prompted a Nazareth timeout.
The home team regrouped before the end of the half by putting one on the board in the 32nd minute. Alexis Root hit the back of the cage with her fifth goal of the year to make the score 3-1 at intermission.
The goal fired up Nazareth for the second half, as the Golden Flyers out-shot Oswego State by a margin of 10-1 and were awarded 11 penalty corners compared to two for the Lakers. One of those penalty corners directly resulted in a Sarah Wazenkewitz goal in the 45th minute to pull Nazareth to within one goal.
Freshman Grace Lombardi (Ossining, N.Y.) stood tall in the cage for the rest of the game, stopping three shots to keep the game from going into overtime. She finished the contest with six saves to pick up her fourth win of the season. Nazareth’s Shannon Winney posted two saves on five shots.
The Lakers wrap up their season on Saturday in Rochester when Oswego State faces St. John Fisher at noon.
