Oswego State field hockey team falls to Geneseo

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Freshman goalie Grace Lombardi (Ossining, N.Y.) kept the Oswego State field hockey team (3-10-1, 1-4-0 SUNYAC) within striking distance of Geneseo (10-4-0, 4-1-0), but in the end the Lakers fell 2-0 on Friday afternoon.

The Blue Knights dominated play in the first half getting off 19 shots. Lombardi made several diving saves early in the game followed by a pair of defensive saves from Ashley Collins (Jr., Whitney Point, N.Y.) to keep Geneseo off the board.

The Blue Knights broke through in the 28th minute when Kerry Hosford passed the ball from the top of the arc to the left post where Kailey Suhr was waiting to slam the ball into the back of the cage.

Less than two minutes later, Hosford hit another teammate, Bridget McGovern, with a pass for the one-timed goal to give the visitors a 2-0 lead at the break.

Oswego State came out more aggressively in the second half and applied pressure on the Geneseo defense. However, the Lakers were unable to get any shots off to cut into the deficit. Oswego State gained a penalty corner as time expired, but could not get a shot through to the goalie.

Lombardi finished the contest with 11 saves, while Dayna Mercer earned the shutout.

The Lakers close out the SUNYAC and home schedule Saturday at 1 p.m. versus Brockport for Senior Day.
