OSWEGO, N.Y. – Alyssa Hare (Sr., Middleport, N.Y.) and Michelle Ruskey (Sr., Deerfield, N.Y.) took charge on the field, as each contributed two goals to help the Oswego State field hockey team (1-3, 1-0 SUNYAC) win its home opener 4-0 on Friday against Morrisville (1-4, 0-1). The first SUNYAC game of the season was the perfect setting for the impressive offensive outbreak that happened on the field.
At the 1:13 mark of the first half, Hare opened the scoring with her first goal of the season with Ruskey earning the assist. The Laker offense continued to pressure the Mustang defense when Hare received a pass, inside the box, from senior captain Jess Felice (Sr., Endicott, N.Y.) to snipe another goal past the Morrisville goalie, for an early 2-0 lead. Ruskey later added a goal of her own on deflection off a Heather Jennings (Jr. Appalachin, N.Y.) shot at the top of the arc during a penalty corner to giving Oswego State a 3-0 lead going into halftime.
The Mustangs came out with vengeance in the second half as they had the Lakers pinned in their end early. The Oswego State defense weathered the storm, while freshman goalie Grace Lombardi (Fr., Ossining, N.Y.) had to be sharp making four saves and recording her first collegiate shutout. Morrisville’s best offensive opportunity came at the 40:02 mark of the stanza when Rebecca Quackenbush took a pass off a penalty corner; however, they could not get the ball past Lombardi.
Ruskey put the icing on the victory when she dribbled through the Mustang defense, and buried her second goal of the night to give the Lakers a 4-0 advantage.
The Lakers look to continue their winning ways on Saturday, when they host Houghton in a non-conference game. Game time is 1 p.m.
