GENEVA, N.Y. – William Smith scored in the eighth and tenth minutes before taking a 3-0 lead into halftime, and never looked back as the Herons handed the Oswego State field hockey team a 7-0 loss on Wednesday night in Geneva. Emily Atwan paced William Smith with two goals and an assist, while Tempe Newson added two goals. In the first contest of the season for both teams, the Herons went to 1-0, while the Lakers fell to 0-1.

Atwan and teammate Annie Kietzman connected with each other on William Smith’s first two goals. Near the end of the first half, Atwan added her second goal of the game when she put her own rebound past Oswego State goalkeeper Jamie Scharfe (Sr., Webster, N.Y.) to give the Herons a 3-0 halftime lead.

William Smith struck multiple times in the first ten minutes in the second period to take control of the contest. Newson notched her second goal at the 65:02 mark when she tapped in a rebound after Scharfe stopped the first shot by Taylor Cappello to make the final score 7-0.

Scharfe finished the game with ten saves as the Herons attempted 26 shots compared to just eight for the Lakers.

Oswego State will play its home opener on Saturday at 1 p.m. versus Houghton College at South Athletic Field.
