Oswego State Lacrosse Comes Up Short Against Cortland

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Second-ranked Cortland (15-0, 5-0 SUNYAC) scored six unanswered goals in the second and third quarters, as the Oswego State men’s lacrosse team (8-6, 1-5 SUNYAC) closed out the regular season with a 10-3 loss to the Red Dragons on Wednesday.

Brian Winterfeldt opened the scoring for Cortland after receiving a pass from Doug Meehan in transition 90 seconds into the game. Casey Balzer (Jr., Nassau, N.Y.) tied the game with 3:08 remaining in the first quarter with his 15th goal of the season. However, the Red Dragons regained the advantage on the ensuing possession when Greg Wright found Taylor Mendoza for the goal.

Wright kept Cortland going in the second quarter scoring 1:09 into the stanza. The Lakers had opportunities, but several shots went high or wide of the cage. The Red Dragons took a 5-1 lead into halftime after goals by Mike Tota and Cody Consul, who scored with five seconds left in the quarter.

Matt Rakoczy, Wright, and Joe Slavik added goals in the third quarter to gain a comfortable 8-1 advantage heading into the final 15 minutes.

Near the end of the third, a Cortland penalty carried over into the fourth quarter, resulting in Matt Palmer (Fr., Pittsford, N.Y.) posting his 16th goal of the year during a man-up situation. Connor Khammar (Camillus, N.Y.) earned an assist on the goal 34 seconds into the fourth.

Matt Hoey and Consul rattled off the next two markers to make the score 10-2 in favor of the visitors before Cody Hoose (Fr., Syracuse, N.Y.) found a cutting Balzer for the goal.

Four Oswego State players, Khammar, Brian Slattery (Fr., St. James, N.Y.), Britt Leone (Sr., Schenectady, N.Y.), and Jason Ketchoyian (Fr., Binghamton, N.Y.), tallied four ground balls each, while Cortland was paced by five from Wright, who finished with two goals and two assists as well.

Laker goalie Ian O’Brien (Sr., Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) ended with 16 saves, including nine in the first quarter, in the first 54 minutes. Tom Gropp (Sr., Fairport, N.Y.) made one stop and allowed no goals in the final 5:45. Cortland goalie Mike Kaminski stopped nine shots and gave up three goals in 52 minutes, while Scott Tota made two saves in nearly eight minutes.

Despite the loss, the Lakers wrap up their season over .500 for the first time since 2000 when the team finished 9-7.
