Oswego State Men’s Basketball Grabs Conference Opening Win Against Potsdam

OSWEGO, N.Y. – A near first-half double-double by junior Hayden Ward and six three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes propelled the Laker men’s basketball team to a 69-54 win over Potsdam at Max Ziel Gymnasium in Oswego in the SUNYAC opener for both teams.

The Lakers (4-1 overall, 1-0 SUNYAC) hit back-to-back three-pointers to open the scoring and never gave up the lead all night.

Ward (Jr., Montauk, N.Y.) had 11 points and eight rebounds in the first half alone, including an offensive put back that drew a foul to push the lead to 30-19 late in the first half.

Sean Michele’s (Sr., East Rochester, N.Y.) fifth assist of the first half set up Alex Mirabito (Jr., West Oneonta, N.Y.) for the sixth and final three-pointer for the Lakers with under 90 seconds left in the half to put the home team up 35-19 at the break.

The Lakers went on a 12-6 run to open the second half behind five points from Chris Gilkes (Jr., Syracuse) and four from Chad Burridge (Sr., Hannibal, N.Y.) to seemingly seal the game.

Potsdam (2-3 overall, 0-1 SUNYAC) hit a trio of three-pointers in the following minutes, but was never able to cut the lead to single digits.

The Lakers hit 12 of 15 free throws in the final two minutes as the Bears tried to extend the game as much as possible.

Ward finished the season-high 19 points and 15 rebounds, while Michele tied his career high with 10 assists. Burridge finished with 17 points to move him into a tie for sixth place all-time on career scoring list at 1,446 points with 2009 graduate Kyle Reuter.

Oswego State is back on its home floor to face Plattsburgh (2-3 overall, 0-1 SUNYAC) at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The Cardinals fell in Cortland 75-66 on Friday night.
