With the start of the new school year, the Oswego State Men’s Hockey Team has been actively preparing for the upcoming season. Team tryouts were held recently over three nights and a record 65 players tried out for 31 roster spots. Three local players were named to this year’s squad; Blaine McClellan, a native of Fulton who last played for the Oswego Admirals, Chris MacRae of Syracuse and D.J. Mazzoni, of Camillus. Both MacRae and Mazzoni were members of the 2009 West Genesee Wildcats State Championship Team. Mazzoni also played at the National Sports Academy in Lake Placid last year.

The Lakers will open their season this Friday, September 24 at 7:00 at the Campus Center Rink when the team will welcome back former players for the third annual Alumni Game. The past two games have both ended in 7 – 7 ties after shootouts and the Club Team is hoping to break that streak this year with a decisive win.

Oswego State is a D1 ACHA team and a member of the NECHL which also includes Syracuse, Cornell, Ithaca, St. Bonaventure, Binghamton, Cortland and Rutgers.

In addition to their league schedule, the Lakers play such teams as Mercyhurst, , Niagara, Canisius, U. of Rochester, and RIT and this year they will also be participating in the Terry Martin Memorial Tournament which is held at Canton and which features Cornell, Canton and John Carroll.

For the second time in four years, the NECHL Tournament returns to the Campus Center during the weekend of February 18-20,2011.. The Lakers won the inaugural tournament back in 2008 at the Campus Center. This year’s seniors started their college hockey careers winning a D1 college hockey tournament when they were freshmen on the team. They hope to end their careers the same way – winning the NECHL Tournament on their own rink.
