The Oswego State menÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s hockey team broke open a 2-1 contest with five goals in the third period for a 7-2 victory over Elmira College on Friday night in Oswego. The line of Justin Fox (Jr., Whitby, Ont.), Chris Laganiere (Jr., Owego, N.Y.), and Eric Selleck (So., Spencerville, Ont.) had a big night for the Lakers as it combined to score 10 points on four goals and six assists. Oswego State opens the season at 1-0-0, while the Soaring Eagles went to 0-1-0.
Elmira drew first blood at 7:50 in the first period when Ryan Davidson snuck a pass from behind the goal through the slot to Larry Willard for the goal. Brice Cook also received an assist. However, the Lakers quickly evened the score at 1-1 one minute into an Elmira tripping penalty. Justin Fox (Jr., Whitby, Ont.) took a shot from the left face-off circle as Soaring Eagle goalie Casey Tuttle made the initial save. Eric Selleck (Spencerville, Ont.) was positioned for the rebound, flipping a backhanded over TuttleÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s left leg. Jon Whitelaw (Fr., Huntsville, Ont.) also received an assist on the goal. Both teams skated into the locker rooms tied 1-1 at the first intermission.
Eric SelleckIn the first minute of the second period, Chris Laganiere (Owego, N.Y.) found Selleck along the right side of the zone, drawing the lone defender. Selleck passed to Justin Fox (Jr., Whitby, Ont.), who was skating down the center of the rink. Fox then wrested the shot above TuttleÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s right pad as he slid from left to right to give Oswego State the lead for good at 2-1, as it would be the last goal of the period heading into the locker room.
Tyler Leimbrock (Fr., Bolton, Ont.) gave the Lakers a two-goal cushion four minutes into the third when he received a pass from behind the net from assistant captain captain Brad Dormiedy (Sr., Ajax, Ont.) at 4:22. LeimbrockÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s shot went between the legs of Tuttle, as the other assistant captain Neil Musselwhite (Sr., Burlington, Ont.) earned an assist too.
Oswego State sealed the win in the 15th minute when Laganiere and Fox capitalized on a 2-on-1 breakaway. Fox carried the puck up the left side, drawing the attention of the goalie before sliding the pass through the defender to Laganiere. He slapped the one-time into the upper right corner of the net for a 4-1 advantage. Fox connected again Laganiere at the 15:43 mark, as Fox moved the puck from right to the left pipe where Laganiere waited for his shot.
Elmira briefly quieted the crowd after the ensuing face-off when Rusty Waters scored to pull the Soaring Eagles to within three goals with four minutes remaining on the clock. However, the Lakers quickly regained the momentum when Dormiedy tallied his first goal of the season after receiving a pass from Leimbrock and Musselwhite. Oswego State tacked on its final goal at 17:11 when Paul Rodrigues (Fr., Etobicoke, Ont.) got the puck past Tuttle with assists going to Whitelaw and Musselwhite.
Sophomore Paul Beckwith (Cleveland, Ohio) made 30 saves on 32 shots on goal, while his counterpart, Casey Tuttle, stopped 20 of 27 shots on goal. The Lakers finished the game 2-for-5 on the power play, while Elmira went 0-for-6.
Oswego State and the Soaring Eagles square off again tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. in Elmira.
