After playing its fifth game in nine days, the top-ranked Oswego State men’s ice hockey team wrapped up 2009 with a 5-1 victory over Hobart College on Saturday at the Campus Center Arena. Freshman Jon Whitelaw (Huntsville, N.Y.) was the Lakers’ top scorer with two goals and two assists, as Oswego State extended its winning streak to 12 games, matching a program-best mark. The Lakers improved to 13-1-0 overall, while the Statesmen dropped to 5-6-2.
An Oswego State unsportsmanlike conduct penalty led to the first goal of the game as a one-timer from the left point by Brad Richard (Fr., New Bedford, Ma.) went in the lower left corner of the net to give Hobart a 1-0 edge. Christopher Bower (Jr., Chevy Chase, Md.) and Blake Bonham (Sr., Toronto, Ont.) were credited with assists on the goal at 14:53.
Stephen Mallaro (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) shot a rocket from the right point that found daylight just under the crossbar and in between the right post after Chris Laganiere (Jr., Owego, N.Y.) won the first face-off on a Laker power play at 4:01 in the second frame to knot the game at 1-1. The Lakers took the lead minutes later when Michael Gilchrist (Fr., Rochester, N.Y.) snuck at shot past Statesman goalie Nick Broadwater (Fr., Portland, Maine) with assists going to Luke Moodie (Fr., Burlington, Ont.) and Whitelaw.
Oswego State extended its lead with its second power-play goal when Justin Fox (Jr., Whitby, Ont.) ripped a pass through the slot to Whitelaw for the one-timer that beat Broadwater, who was sliding across the crease from left to right. Eric Selleck (So., Spencerville, Ont.) also received an assist, as the Lakers headed into the second intermission with a 3-1 advantage.
Oswego State added two more goals in the third period when Andrew Mather (So., Ottawa, Ont.) tallied his first goal of the season after receiving a passes from Laganiere and Selleck at the 11:37 mark. Whitelaw registered his second score of the night when he skated up the left side, controlling the puck long enough for the defender to commit to Rodrigues in a 2-on-1 situation. His wrist shot went underneath the crossbar flipping Broadwater’s water bottle with 7:53 remaining to seal the win. Moodie and Tyler Lyon (Sr., Foxboro, Ont.) were credited with assists on the play.
Laker netminder Kyle Gunn-Taylor (Sr., West Seneca, N.Y.), who recorded several pivotal saves in the first and third period, posted 29 saves, as he improved to 9-0-0 on the season. Hobart goaltender Nick Broadwater compiled 27 saves on 32 shots. Both teams combined to commit 21 penalties adding up to 61 minutes, as Oswego State went 3-for-6 and the Statesmen went 1-for-4.
The Lakers return to action on Saturday, January 2 when they face Connecticut College in the first round of the Pathfinder Bank Hockey Classic at the Campus Center Arena. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
