KINGS POINT, NY – The Oswego State men’s lacrosse team remained perfect on its first weekend of the season with a 6-5 victory over host United State Merchant Marine Academy on Sunday afternoon at Brooks Stadium.
With the win, the Lakers go to 2-0 on the season while the Mariners fall to 1-1.
After jumping out to a 3-1 lead through the first 15 minutes, Oswego gave up the game’s next three tallies to trail Merchant Marine 4-3 with 6:46 left in the second quarter.
Just 2:32 later, the Lakers would notch the equalizer as freshman Luke Krizman made it a 4-4 contest, which it would remain into the halftime.
The Mariners would tie it with a score with 3:59 to go in the third, but again Oswego would answer quickly, as Matt Palmer scored one of his game-high three goals from Tyler Nason with just 42 second showing on the clock in the third period.
With a 6-5 advantage heading into the final quarter, it was Oswego’s defense and goaltending that would secure the victory.
In the fourth, the Lakers won the period’s only faceoff, collected six ground balls (three more than the Mariners) and goalie Wyatt Russo made one of his 10 saves on the day to keep Merchant Marine off the scoreboard.
For the second straight game, Oswego was efficient on the clear, successfully transitioning the ball from its defensive zone into the offensive box 14-of-18 times.
Helping Palmer and Krizman with the remaining two Laker goals were Jimmy Cordon and Connor Khammar, each scoring once.
Oswego will put its early-season perfect record on the line at 4 p.m. on Wednesday when it travels to Elmira College to face the Soaring Eagles in a nonconference matchup.
