SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Cody Hoose (So., Syracuse, N.Y.) turned in a hat trick and tallied an assist in his hometown, as the Oswego State men’s lacrosse team (2-0) defeated Adrian (2-2) at Le Moyne College in Syracuse on Saturday afternoon.
The Lakers battled back from an early deficit and rallied again in the fourth period to oust the Bulldogs, who stayed close despite a huge deficit in shots. Oswego State outshot Adrian 48-20, and collected 30 groundballs, to just nine for the Bulldogs.
Oswego State rushed out of the gates, as Matt Palmer (So., Pittsford, N.Y.) and Hoose scored in the game’s first 10 minutes. However, the Lakers wouldn’t score again for the next 20 minutes, as Adrian piled on five goals to take a 5-2 lead. Adrian’s Tom Thielman scored two goals during the stretch.
The Lakers responded with five unanswered goals of their own, with three coming in the final 5:15 of the first half. Chris Porten (Jr., Auburn, N.Y.) capitalized on an Adrian slashing penalty, scoring a man-up goal with 1:47 remaining in the stanza to tie the game at 5 apiece. Laker goalie Bryan Martin (Jr., St. James, N.Y.) stopped a Thielman shot on after a Bulldog timeout to keep the game knotted up at halftime.
The Bulldogs had trouble staying out of the penalty box in the second half, as they committed six of the contest’s seven second-half fouls. The Lakers cashed in on 3-of-7 extra-man opportunities in the game, with two coming in the second half. The Bulldogs did not have a man-up chance.
Oswego State scored its fifth consecutive goal with just under seven minutes left in the third period, when Connor Khammar (So., Camillus, N.Y.) recovered his own shot off the post and restarted the offense, leading to Hoose’s second goal of the game.
Adrian’s Drake Dailey-Chwalibog responded with a goal and two assists in a six-minute span to give the Bulldogs a 8-7 lead with 12:58 left in the game. The Lakers battled back one more time, scoring the final three goals. Hoose completed the hat-trick on a man-up goal to tie the score before Khammar netted the eventual game-winner with 7:50 left.
The Lakers caused three turnovers and blocked Adrian’s only shot after the Khammar goal to stay ahead before Porten buried the insurance goal with 22 seconds left. Nick Giampaolo (Jr., Setauket, N.Y.) controlled the ball well behind the net and drew multiple defenders before feeding a streaking Porten for the easy finish.
Martin finished with six saves in the victory, and Adrian’s Kevin Lerg made 18 stops for the Bulldogs. Casey Ballzer (Sr., Nassau, N.Y.) tacked on two unassisted markers for the Lakers.
