Oswego State softball drops a pair in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Oswego State softball team opened the 2012 slate with a 9-1 loss to Simmons College (3-7) and an 8-3 loss to Marywood University (2-7) on Friday afternoon at the National Training Center.

In the day’s first game against Simmons, the Lakers (0-2) got on the scoreboard right away in their first at-bat. Sophomore Katie Bredin (Oneonta, N.Y.) led off the game with a single to left field, and moved into scoring position after a successfully executed sacrifice bunt by classmate Sammie Schroeter (Schenectady, N.Y.).

Bredin came around to score following a Shark infield error to make the score 1-0. With one out in the bottom of the first, Simmons had four straight batters reach with a pair of walks and a pair of singles, resulting in three runs before the end of the inning.

Oswego State threatened in the next inning after Shannon Baker (Sr., Hannibal, N.Y.) stood at second base following a single and a stolen base. However, the Lakers were unable to bring her across the plate.

The Sharks loaded the bases in their half of the second, but Oswego State pitcher Sarah Thayer (Jr., Winthrop, N.Y.) worked out of the jam by striking out the clean-up hitter.

Neither offense was able to generate much action on the base path until the bottom of the fourth when a Laker miscue plated an unearned run for Simmons to make the score 4-1 after Danielle Groat (Fr., Ballston Spa, N.Y.) relieved Thayer in the circle.

Oswego State mounted a two-out rally in the next at-bat, but two runners were stranded at first and second. The Sharks posted five runs in the fifth inning on four hits and two errors to end the game.

Thayer suffered the loss after tossing three hits with four walks and four strikeouts for three earned runs over the course of three innings. Groat allowed four hits and recorded three walks and a strikeout in 1.1 innings, resulting in six runs, three of which were unearned. Bredin finished the game 2-for-3 at the dish, while Baker and Schroeter posted the other two Laker hits.

Against Marywood, the Lakers received RBI from Brittany Carbacio (Sr., Pennellville, N.Y.), Brandy Earl (Jr., Oswego, N.Y.), and Baker, while Brooke Radley (Jr., Pulaski, N.Y.) registered a double. Ashley Snyder (Jr., Pulaski, N.Y.) racked up six strikeouts in the circle despite picking up the loss.

Oswego State faces Rhode Island College and Burlington County College tomorrow at 3 and 5 p.m., respectively, at the National Training Center.
