FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team bounced back from a 5-4 loss by holding off a late rally from Fredonia in the second game of the doubleheader to salvage a split with a 2-1 win Saturday. The Lakers (8-9, 4-4 SUNYAC) have a busy week ahead of them with four doubleheaders on their home field next week.
The Blue Devils (10-11-1, 2-6 SUNYAC) held a 1-0 advantage to start the third inning when Dee Apps (So., Camillus, N.Y.) and Sue Schoff (Jr., Little Falls, N.Y.) delivered two-out singles. Apps later scored following a passed ball and a wild pitch to give Oswego State tie the game. Fredonia immediately responded in its half of the third by scoring a pair of unearned runs to go ahead 3-1.
The Lakers cut the deficit in half in the top of the fourth when a Blue Devil miscue resulted in Brandy Earl (Jr., Oswego, N.Y.) scoring from second base after drawing a walk to start the frame.
A lead-off Lauren Larson triple to start the bottom of the sixth allowed Fredonia to regain the lead after a RBI single by Brittany Lis. However, Oswego State plated two runs in the top of the seventh to even the score a second time following a RBI single from Nicole Ouellette (Jr., Castleton, N.Y.) and a pinch-hit RBI walk drawn by Shannon Baker (Sr., Hannibal, N.Y.).
Fredonia recorded two ground outs to start the bottom of the seventh, but loaded the bases courtesy of a single sandwiched between two walks. A Laker mistake then resulted in the game-winning run being scored by Michelle Lattner.
Ashley Snyder (Jr., Pulaski, N.Y.) earned the loss after working 3.2 innings and allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out three. Danielle Groat (Fr., Ballston Spa, N.Y.) gave up three runs on six hits in the first three innings to go with two walks and strikeouts.
Apps finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs, while Schoff went 2-for-3.
Game two was a pitchers’ duel through five innings until the Lakers struck in the top of the sixth inning. Maureen Lenehan (Fr., Syracuse, N.Y.) hit an RBI single with the bases loaded and one out to bring in pinch runner Brittany Carbacio (Sr., Pennellville, N.Y.). Baker was then hit by a pitch to score Snyder to put Oswego State ahead 2-0.
Fredonia threatened in the sixth, but stranded runners on second and third to keep the two-run lead in tact.
However, the Blue Devils mounted a rally in the seventh. Tina Schwartzmeyer delivered a two-out RBI double scoring Alison Pixley, but Snyder got the next batter to ground out to Katie Bredin (So., Oneonta, N.Y.) at second base.
Snyder picked up the win, as she scattered seven hits, two strikeouts, four walks and one run over seven innings.
