Oswego State softball team splits doubleheader

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team (10-17) posted a six-run fifth inning in game one to win, 9-1, but was unable to come up with the sweep of Nazareth (8-22) after dropping the second game, 4-2, Thursday afternoon.

Sammie Schroeter (So., Schenectady, N.Y.) had a big day at the plate for the Lakers going a combined 4-for-7 with two runs scored and an RBI.

The Golden Flyers opened game one with Kailey Ritch scoring in the first after drawing a lead-off walk, which was the only run until the bottom of the third when Schroeter hit a one-out solo home run that hit the American flag waving in straight away center field.

Oswego State took the lead in the next inning when Brooke Radley (Jr., Pulaski, N.Y.) singled in Ashley Snyder (Jr., Pulaski, N.Y.) from second. However, Shannon Baker (Sr., Hannibal, N.Y.), who started the at-bat on first base, slid into third following a play at the plate and advanced home as a result of a Nazareth throwing error to make the score 3-1.

Schroeter led off the fifth with a bloop single in shallow center field, but the ball got away from the defense and rolled back to the fence as she ended up at third base. Dee Apps (So., Camillus, N.Y.) delivered in the next at-bat with a single into left field to plate Schroeter.

Later in the frame, the Lakers loaded the bases with two outs. The Golden Flyers had two straight errors to bring in three runs with Nicole Ouellette (Jr., Castleton, N.Y.) and Sarah Thayer (Jr., Winthrop, N.Y.) in scoring position. Katie Bredin (So., Oneonta, N.Y.) stepped to the plate and shot a single through the right side of the infield to score both runners for the walk-off hit, as Oswego State took game one, 9-1 in five innings.

Thayer earned her first win of the season allowing just one unearned run on one hit, four strikeouts, and three walks. Corrin Spallone suffered the loss after giving up two earned runs on seven hits to go along with nine strikeouts and four walks. She also recorded the lone Nazareth hit in the game. Schroeter and Baker each went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the home team.

Nazareth started the second contest in a similar fashion when a Liz Toner single followed by two Laker errors resulted in the Golden Flyers going ahead 1-0 in the first stanza.

The game became tied in the bottom of the third when Bredin posted a two-out single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Schroeter brought Bredin around in the same at-bat.

Nazareth added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a two-run lead. Oswego State got one run back in the sixth when a Justine Abramowski (Fr., Levittown, N.Y.) double rolled to the fence in left field to score Apps from second and put two runners in scoring position with two outs. However, a foul pop fly caught by the catcher ended the scoring threat.

The Golden Flyers got the run back in the top of the seventh when Sophia Rhoades hit one of her three singles of the game to drive in Cipperly from third base. Oswego State had the tying run at the plate with two outs in its last chance, but another foul pop fly to the catcher wrapped up the game.

Schoreter went 2-for-4 in the game with an RBI. Snyder suffered the loss after allowing three earned runs over 6.1 innings, while striking out six and walking one. Kelly Kocker registered the complete-game win scattering five hits, fanning 11, and walking three.
