OSWEGO, N.Y. – After dropping the first game of a twinbill, the Oswego State softball team (9-12) bounced back in a big way with a 10-4 victory over visiting SUNYIT (13-8). Sue Schoff (Jr., Little Falls, N.Y.) and Ashley Snyder (Jr., Pulaski, N.Y.) each hit three-run home runs in game two to help the Lakers rebound from a 6-2 game one loss.
Krista Pristera’s solo home run in the first inning of game one put SUNYIT, but Oswego State countered with back-to-back doubles from Ashley Snyder (Jr., Pulaski, N.Y.) and Shannon Baker (Sr., Hannibal, N.Y.) in the second to level the score.
However, in the third, the Wildcats plated five unearned runs on three hits with the pivotal blow coming on a Tiffany Troilo two-RBI single. The Lakers got a run back in the bottom of the fifth when Sammie Schroeter (So., Schenectady, N.Y.) drove in Brandy Earl (Jr., Oswego, N.Y.), but Oswego State did not score the rest of the way.
Danielle Groat (Fr., Ballston Spa, N.Y.) was the hard-luck loser after allowing six runs, one of which was earned, and giving up four hits in three innings. She walked three and struck out three as well. Sarah Thayer (Jr., Winthrop, N.Y.) came on in relief for the final four innings, allowing no runs on four hits to go along with four strikeouts and two walks.
Snyder was the only Laker to record multiple hits.
In game two, SUNYIT jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first an RBI single from Juleah Vedder and a two-RBI base knock from Amanda Pratt.
Oswego State’s bats came alive in the third, though, when it scored four runs on five hits. Katie Bredin (So., Oneonta, N.Y.) and Schroeter used their speed to get on base with infield singles with one out. The next batter hit into a fielder’s choice for the Lakers’ second out. Snyder, then, helped her cause in the circle by coming up with an RBI single to make the score 3-1.
Schoff stepped in the batter’s box and hit a towering three-run blast into right field over the scoreboard to give Oswego State its first lead of the day at 4-3.
The score stayed that way until the sixth when a pair of Wildcat defensive miscues allowed the Lakers touch home plate six times to take control of the game. Snyder produced the lethal blow of the frame when she hit a three-run homer over the left field fence.
SUNYIT scored a run in the top of the seventh, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
Snyder went the distance in the circle fanning eight batters, walking two, and surrendering four runs on six hits. She also 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI. Schoff finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Schroeter and Dee Apps (So., Camillus, N.Y.) each went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Oswego State returns to doubleheader conference action on Saturday when it hosts Cortland at noon.
