ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team (14-14) pushed its winning streak to five games and reached the .500 mark after sweeping Nazareth (5-20) by the scores of 14-9 and 5-3 Tuesday afternoon. The Lakers, who have won eight of their last ten games, were powered by three home runs in game one and scored four runs in the last three innings of the second game to earn a come-from-behind win.
Nazareth built a three-run lead in the first inning, but Brooke Radley (Sr., Pulaski, N.Y.) drilled a two-run homer over the left field fence to start a four-run second inning for Oswego State. Later in the frame, Sammie Schroeter (Jr., Schenectady, N.Y.) delivered a bases-loaded single that plated Alexandra McKay (Fr., Fairport, N.Y.) and Tori Trovato (Fr., Fulton, N.Y.) drew a walk to bring in Nicole Ouellette (Sr., Castleton, N.Y.). The Golden Flyers responded with a three-run shot of their own from Sarah Cipperly in the bottom half of the inning to put Nazareth back in front, 6-4.
The Lakers had the first seven batters of the third reach safely with the key at-bat coming from Schroeter, who roped a double into the gap in right center to bring in two runs. Radley closed out the seven-run stanza with a sacrifice fly to center that drove in Schroeter, as Oswego State grabbed an 11-6 advantage.
Nazareth capitalized on a Laker error in the fourth that resulted in three unearned runs to bring the home team within two runs.
The score stood at 11-9 to start the sixth until McKay led off the inning with a solo homerun to center field. She was not finished though as she hit her second homer of the game in the seventh with Radley on base to make the score 14-9.
McKay ended up 4-for-5 with four RBI and four runs scored, while Radley was 2-for-2 with three RBI, three runs and a pair of walks. Schroeter finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.
Alexis Nasca (Fr., Hamburg, N.Y.) earned the win after tossing the final five innings in relief, giving up three unearned runs on seven hits. Danae Wetherbee recorded the loss after allowing 14 earned runs on 18 Laker hits.
In the second game, both teams traded runs in the first inning before Nazareth scored a run in the second and fourth innings to take a 3-1 lead.
Sue Schoff (Sr., Little Falls, N.Y.) started the Oswego State rally in the fifth with a leadoff single. Schroeter later drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to pull the Lakers to within one.
The visitors tied the game in the sixth when Schoff laced a single into right field that plated Dee Apps (Jr., Camillus, N.Y.) and took the lead in the seventh when a Schroeter bunt single managed to score Katie Bredin (Jr., Oneonta, N.Y.) all the way from second. The Lakers tacked on an insurance run following a Radley sacrifice fly en route to the win.
Bredin led Oswego State at the plate going 3-for-4 with runs, while Schroeter, McKay, Apps and Schoff recorded two hits apiece.
Alexandria Connelly (Fr., Endicott, N.Y.) scattered six hits for three runs over the first five innings before Sarah Thayer (Sr., Winthrop, N.Y.) picked up the win in relief by not allowing a hit in the last two frames. Nicole Bayona registered the complete-game loss after giving up five runs on 13 hits.
Oswego State wraps up the SUNYAC schedule on the road this weekend with pivotal contests against Geneseo and Brockport.
