MARCY, NY – The Oswego State softball team (9-13) notched its second doubleheader sweep of the season after defeating SUNYIT (10-8), 7-4 and 4-2, Thursday afternoon.
The Lakers made the Wildcats pay for a leadoff walk issued to Katie Bredin (Jr., Oneonta, N.Y.) by playing small ball when Tori Trovato (Fr., Fulton, N.Y.) delivered a single to bring in Bredin from second after a Marietta Silliman (Fr., Smithtown, N.Y.) sacrifice bunt. Oswego State, then, took a 2-0 lead in the second following a Bredin single that plated Sue Schoff (Sr., Little Falls, N.Y.).
In the bottom of the fourth, SUNYIT turned four singles and two Laker miscues into four runs to grab the lead. The Lakers got one run back in their next at-bat when Silliman scored following a Trovato RBI hit.
Oswego State regained the lead in the top of the sixth when designated player Brooke Radley (Sr., Pulaski, N.Y.) hit a two-run shot over the right field fence that also scored Nicole Ouellette (Sr., Castleton, N.Y.). Four batters later, Maureen Lenehan (So., Syracuse, N.Y.) and Jacquie Porrcea (Fr., Lancaster, N.Y.) touched home plate to push the Laker advantage to four runs after Silliman produced a two-out double.
The Wildcats loaded the bases in the bottom half of the frame, but a line out to Bredin at second base ended the threat as Alexandria Connelly (Fr., Endicott, N.Y.) sat down the side in the seventh.
Connelly earned her first collegiate win after keeping SUNYIT off the scoreboard in the final 3.2 innings. Alexis Nasca (Fr., Hamburg, N.Y.) recorded a no-decision following four runs, one of which was earned, on four hits in the first 3.1 innings. Bredin, Silliman and Trovato went a combined 5-for-10 at the top of the order with two runs scored and four RBI to jump start the Laker offense. Erica Hovey suffered the loss in the circle for SUNYIT, allowing seven runs on ten hits over 5.2 innings.
Trovato continued to wield a hot bat in the nightcap, as she drove in Bredin in the first inning to give Oswego State the early one-run edge. The score stood at 1-0 until a Radley pinch-hit double drove in Trovato, who started the inning with a double of her own, and Dee Apps (Jr., Camillus, N.Y.). Lenehan came in to run for Radley, and touched home after a Schoff double to put the Lakers out in front 4-0.
SUNYIT mounted a rally in its final at-bat after back-to-back singles, as Taylor Pritchard and Alison Short scored to cut the deficit in half. However, Sarah Thayer (Sr., Winthrop, N.Y.) registered her sixth strikeout of the contest to end the game and recorded her fourth win of the season.
The Lakers host a pair of pivotal SUNYAC doubleheaders on Saturday against New Paltz and Sunday against Oneonta. Both contests start at noon.
