The Oswego State men’s and women’s swimming teams started the 2009-10 season with wins over Division II LeMoyne on Saturday in Syracuse. The women won by the score of 131-112, while the men claimed a 121-120 win by winning the final relay of the meet by seven hundredths of a second.
Senior Jenny VanEtten (Ravena, N.Y.) won the 100 backstroke and the 100 breaststroke with times of 1:05.25 and 1:09.55, respectively, to lead the womenÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s squad, while junior Shawn Merlin (Palmyra, N.Y.) was a double winner in the diving events. Merlin scored 262.20 points on the 3-meter board and 181.70 points on the 1-meter board.
Other event winners on the womenÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s side included Hannah Slaga (Fr., East Greenbush, N.Y.) in the 50 freestyle (26.23) and the 100 freestyle (56.41), Eileen McMahon (Sr., Clay, N.Y.) on the 1-meter board (163.20) and the 3-meter board (244.20), and Nikki Dean (Jr., Lansing, N.Y.) in the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.96).
In addition to MerlinÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s first place finishes, Nick Masia (Pine City, N.Y.) was the only other male to take first place in an event as he touched the wall in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:12.26. The lone first place relay team was the 200 free relay that competed in the last event of the dual meet to decide the result. The team posted a time of 1:30.89, while the second place LeMoyne squad clocked a time of 1:30.96.
The Lakers host their first dual meet of the season on Wednesday against RIT at 6 p.m.
