Oswego State volleyball team falls to Canton

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State volleyball team (9-10) struggled to stop the SUNY Canton (14-2) offense on Friday night, as the Lakers suffered a straight-set loss (25-21, 25-12, 25-18) on Friday night at Max Ziel Gymnasium.

The Roos tallied 36 kills en route to a .253 team hitting percentage compared to Oswego State, which hit .011.

The first set was a seesaw affair until the teams reached 20 points each. SUNY Canton went on to win five of the next six points behind two kills from Jessica Reynolds and Morgan Bills each and block by Reynolds and Caitlin Grimshaw.

Reynolds continued to play well in the early stages of the second set, when she rattled off three kills to help the visitors take an 8-2 lead. Bills extended the margin with three service aces on the next SUNY Canton service rotation to make the score 14-6. The Lakers closed out the set with four miscues to give the Roos a two-set advantage.

Oswego State fell behind early in the third set, 7-2, but pulled to within three points compliments of two Kara Michelsen (So., Lake View, N.Y.) service aces at 9-6. However, that would be as close as the home team would get the rest of the way after Abbey Shoen closed out the match with one of her team-high 10 kills.

Chelsea Crump (Sr., Sandy Creek, N.Y.) was the top Laker hitter with seven kills, as Sabrina Sutton (Jr., Fulton, N.Y.) finished with 10 digs and Michelsen registered 18 assists and three aces. Mackenzie Mynter dished out 26 assists for the Roos, while Danielle Swanston posted a game-high 12 digs for the Roos.

Oswego State hosts Utica Saturday at 1 p.m. in Max Ziel Gymnasium.
