Oswego State Women’s Basketball Comes Up Short At Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Meagan Stover’s layup with 32 seconds remaining pulled the Oswego State women’s basketball team within two points of Cortland, but the Red Dragons were able to hold on for a 63-60 win Saturday afternoon.  The Lakers (11-9, 6-7 SUNYAC)  trailed by as much as 17 points in the second half, but nearly came away with the victory.

Senior Kayla Ryan (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) led Oswego State with 22 points and 10 rebounds. She hit 8-of-14 shots from the floor, 3-of-4 from three-point range. Kari Kipper (Jr., Loudonville, N.Y.) totaled 12 points and five rebounds and Jenna Rossi (Sr., Phoenix, N.Y.) led the squad with five assists.

Brittany Cohen scored 13 points and handed out five assists, while Micki Volpini surpassed the career 1,000-point mark with nine points for Cortland (13-7, 8-5 SUNYAC). Megan Maycumber also added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Red Dragons.

Trailing 20-19 with 7:45 left in the first half, Cortland went on an 11-0 run to take a 30-20 lead. Lindsay Minor and Brittany Rando scored six and five points, respectively, to account for all of the points in that stretch.

Oswego State cut its deficit to 33-28 on two Meagan Stover (Jr., Lake George, N.Y.) free throws with 31 seconds left, but Erin Wolstenholme hit a long three-pointer at the halftime buzzer to give Cortland an eight-point lead.

Cortland tallied the first nine points of the second half to gain its largest lead at 45-28 after Maycumber started the run with two layups.

Oswego State battled its way back into the game over the next 10 minutes. Kipper’s three-pointer with 8:46 left drew the Lakers within eight points and Ryan hit a jumper with 6:52 left to make the score 51-45.

The margin fluctuated between five and eight points over the next six minutes. Cortland led 59-52 after two Cohen free throws with 1:26 left, but Kipper hit a trey with 46 seconds remaining to make it a four-point game. Following a Cortland missed foul shot, Stover converted a layup at the 32-second mark and Oswego State was within two.

Cohen hit a free throw with 28 seconds left. She missed the second, but got the rebound and Molly Byrne made one foul shot to put Cortland up four. After another Red Dragon free throw with 18 seconds left, Oswego State came down the court and Lauren Nunziato (So., West Sand Lake, N.Y.) hit a long trey with eight seconds left to cut the lead to 62-60.

With six seconds left, Cohen made a free throw, but missed her second attempt. The Lakers had a possession with a chance to tie, but was called for a carry with less than two seconds remaining.

Oswego State hits the road next weekend with games against New Paltz and Oneonta on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
