Oswego State women’s basketball team drops a heartbreaker

Oneonta, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 66-62 contest at Oneonta on Tuesday night. Oswego’s loss drops the team to 4-6 overall and 0-3 in SUNYAC play.

Jenn Robbins hit her fifth 3-pointer of the night with 1:59 remaining in the game to give the Lakers a 61-60 advantage over the Red Dragons.

Oneonta knotted the score 15 seconds later by making 1-of-2 free throws. The Lakers took back the lead for the final time as Mary Mazzella knocked down one of her free throws with 1:33 on the clock.

The Red Dragons proceeded to score the games last five points to hand Oswego the loss.

The two teams played even throughout, with the game switching leads 17 times and featuring several ties.

Neither team led by more than six points during the 40 minutes of play. Oswego and Oneonta headed to the half in a 29-29 tie.

Robbins led the Lakers with 22 points and four assists on the night. The senior shot 5-for-12 (47.1%) from beyond the arc. Paula Egelston chipped in 12 points in the contest, including eight in the first half, along with a team-high seven boards. Also finishing with double digits was Mazzella with 11.

Oswego will continue conference play at 6 p.m. on Friday when it hosts Fredonia in Max Ziel Gymnasium.
