Oswego State Women’s Ice Hockey Sweeps Chatham After 9-3 Win

PITTSBURGH — The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team rode a six-goal third period to a 9-3 win over Chatham to sweep the weekend series at Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh. The Lakers raised their record to 7-5-2 overall, 6-2-2 in the ECAC Women’s West standings, as Chatham fell to 0-8.

Chelsey Draker (Fr., Listowel, Ont.) put Oswego State up 1-0 during a penalty-filled first period. Draker lit the lamp on a 5-on-3 with Kelly Collins (Sr., Fairport, N.Y.) and Jillian Bergeron (Sr., Brockville, Ont.) earning assists at 10:50 in the opening stanza. Draker added a second goal at 7:56 in the second on the power play. Draker wristed a shot top-shelf past Cougar goaltender Megan Buchanan from the left side of the ice, with assists to Jocelyn St. Clair (So., Cambridge, Ont.) and Bergeron.

Mackenzie Lee (Sr., Caledonia, N.Y.) stretched the lead to 3-0 with a short-handed goal at 8:44 in the second. Lee used her speed to take the puck all the way from her own zone all the way to the back of the net. Kathryn Sbrocchi (Sr., Mississauga, Ont.) received an assist on the play.

Chatham put its first goal on the board during a 4-on-4 situation at 19:30 in the second period. Sara Forbes jumped on a loose puck at the left side of the net and pushed it past Laker goalie Bridget Smith (Fr., Hamburg, N.Y.) to pull the Cougars within 3-1.

But Kelly Collins shifted the momentum back Oswego State’s way with a goal that keyed a fast start for the Lakers in the third period. Collins scored just 12 seconds into the final frame on an unassisted slapshot from the right side. Less than two minutes later, Bergeron increased the lead to 5-1 for the Lakers. Her goal at 2:07 in the third came off assists from Carly Henderson (So., Markham, Ont.) and Breanne Reith (East St. Paul, Man.).

It took just 17 seconds for Oswego State to stretch its advantage to 6-1 when Jocelyn St. Clair scored off a Melissa Seamont (So., North Bay, Ont.) assist at 2:24 in the third. Lauren Gilpin (Sr., Georgetown, Ont.) tacked on another goal, with assists from Megan Howe (So., Stratford, Ont.) and Sbrocchi at 7:39 in the third before Howe added a short-handed unassisted goal at 12:23 to put Oswego up 8-1.

Chatham refused to go quietly, answering with a power-play goal at 15:06 by Ashley Reid, off a Forbes assist. Collins responded again with her second goal, unassisted at 15:24, to give Oswego a 9-2 lead. Forbes rounded out the scoring with her second tally at 17:32, with an Alex Moffatt assist, to pull the Cougars back within the 9-3 final margin.

Bridget Smith earned the win in goal for Oswego State, allowing one goal on six shots to raise her record to 3-1-1. Netminder Megan Amlinger (Sr., Mississauga, Ont.) came on in the third period for the Lakers, yielding two goals on four shots. Chatham goaltender Buchanan finished with 48 saves on 57 shots.

Oswego State finished the game with two goals on five power-play opportunities, while Chatham went one for seven with the extra attacker.

The Lakers return to action on Tuesday, hosting Hamilton College in a non-conference tilt at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center.
