Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse Falls To Fredonia, 16-12

OSWEGO, N.Y. – On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, the Oswgeo State women’s lacrosse team finished the 2011 season with a 16-12 loss to Fredonia on Senior Day at South Athletic Field. The Blue Devils scored four goals between the first and second halves to distance themselves from the Lakers en route to the win. Rachael Raffa ended with a game-high six points on five goals and an assist. Fredonia, which finished the year at 11-5 overall and 4-4 in the league, was led by five goals from Karli Brinthaupt. Oswego State ended the year at 8-6 overall and 3-5 in the conference.

With the score level at 1-1 five minutes into the game after goals by Fredonia’s Marissa Cussins and the Lakers’ Bri Borrow, the Blue Devils rattled off three goals in under three minutes to take a permanent lead at 4-1. Erin Cummings scored and then found Raffa for her first goal of the game midway through the first half to make it a 4-3 game.

Both teams traded goals to keep it a one-goal game until Karli Brinthaupt and Laura Culhane scored for the visitors to go ahead, 8-5, with under two minutes remaining in the half. Raffa and Cummings connected again in the last minute, but Brinthaupt converted a free position shot to give Fredonia a 9-6 lead at halftime.

The Blue Devils tacked on the first three goals of the second half for a 12-6 advantage before an unassisted Amanda Hecox goal stopped the scoring streak. After a Fredonia goal, Kelly Collins made a free position shot at the midway point of the half. The Blue Devils scored three of the next four goals with Stephanie Cronk accounting for the Oswego State goal. Raffa and Hecox tallied the final two goals of the game, but it would not be enough as Fredonia recorded the 16-11 win.

Ashlee Engel and Nicole Nalle combined to make 12 saves for the Lakers with Engel receiving the loss. Fredonia’s Casey Chiesa finished with 12 saves as well.
