Oswego State women’s lacrosse team remains in hunt for playoff spot

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s lacrosse team (6-7, 3-3 SUNYAC) rallied behind the performance of goalie Nikki Greco (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) to pull out the win in a 5-4 affair over Brockport (10-5, 4-3) on a cold Saturday afternoon.

Greco finished the game with 17 saves to help the Lakers remain the SUNYAC playoff race.

The game started slow, with both teams struggling to find a goal in the first 13 minutes of play. Oswego State’s Esther Gabriel (Fr., Lancaster, N.Y.) finally got things going, scoring off of an Erannan Shattuck (Fr., Syracuse, N.Y.) assist to put the Lakers ahead, 1-0.

Another Oswego State goal from Danielle Citro (Sr., Miller Place, N.Y.) on an assist from Lindsey Eggers (Fr., Ridge, N.Y.) put the Lakers up by two with 8:35 remaining in the half, but a late Brockport goal from Nina Tassone ended the low-scoring first half and sent the Lakers into halftime leading 2-1.

Citro and Gabriel started things off early for the Lakers when Citro netted a pass from Kaila Curatalo (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) less than a minute into the second half and Gabriel added her second marker of the game a minute later.

After a Brockport goal with 24 minutes on the scoreboard, Heather Titanic (Fr., Amherst, N.Y.) found the back of the net with her first collegiate goal after receiving a pass from Shelly Bateman (Sr., Fulton, N.Y.) to put the Lakers ahead, 5-2, with 16 minutes left in the game.

Greco came up big in the final fifteen minutes of play for Oswego State, making six saves, including two on free-position shots to seal the victory. Brockport managed two more goals, but were unable to even the score as the Lakers pulled out the win.

Remle Harr finished the game with five saves and five goals allowed in the cage for the Golden Eagles. Brockport ended the contest going 1-for-8 on free-position shots.

The Lakers return home on Tuesday for a league game against New Paltz at 4 p.m.
