BUFFALO, N.Y. – Kassie Kleine (So., Cazenovia, N.Y.) jumpstarted the Oswego State women’s soccer team in its season opener with a goal 3:48 into the game as the Lakers defeated D’Youville 8-1 on Wednesday night in Buffalo. Kleine’s goal was the first of three scores tallied in the first 13 minutes as head coach Brian McGrane’s squad held a 6-0 advantage at halftime.
Kleine notched her first goal of the season after receiving a ball from Alexa Bieber (Jr., Slingerlands, N.Y.) and Nikki Liadka (Fr., Liverpool, N.Y.). Freshman Kelly Adams and sophomore Shelly Bateman (Fulton, N.Y.) went on to score two goals before the end of the first half with another goal coming off the foot of Liadka. Oswego State dominated the period as it out-shot the Spartans 13-1.
Britt Williams (Jr., Massapequa, N.Y.) kept the scoring going in the 62nd minute with the assist going to Alexa Krebs (Jr., Massapequa, N.Y.). However, D’Youville ended the shutout bid at the 75:35 mark when Danielle Geshen put the Spartans on the board, but the Lakers quickly regained the seven-goal margin with a goal from Kaylie Ewers (Fr., Livonia, N.Y.) in the final five minutes. Leah Malbeuf (So., Harrisville, N.Y.) earned an assist on the play.
Christina Fregosi (So., Massapequa, N.Y.) recorded the win despite making no saves as the defense held D’Youville to three total shots and one shot on goal.
Oswego State will take its 1-0 record to Clinton on Sunday as the Lakers face non-conference Hamilton at 1 p.m.
