ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Four Oswego State wrestlers registered second-place finishes at the RIT Invitational to help the Lakers place third out of 11 teams with 122 points.
Omar Santiago, Michael Gentilcore, Andrew Cole, and Kyle Sheridan each posted runner-up results, as Wesleyan won the team title with 152 points.
Santiago (Sr., Huntington Station, N.Y.) recorded a pair of third-period pins and a major decision victory at 133 pounds en route to earning a spot in the championship bout. He then lost to Oneonta’s Ben Mikac, 14-6, in a major decision.
In the next weight class, Gentilcore (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) pinned his first round opponent before recording a major decision and a 13-10 victory to advance to final match. Gentilcore squared off against Wesleyan’s Nick Scotto, but came up short in an 11-3 major decision.
Freshman Andrew Cole (Uniondale, N.Y.) edged out Mikhail Solomonik of RIT, 4-3, in the first round and registered a pin in 1:30. Cole moved to the 197-pound championship bout after defeating John San Filippo, but fell to Josh Roometua, 3-0.
Senior Kyle Sheridan (Syracuse, N.Y.) pinned his first opponent, as well, in a time of 2:14. He rattled off a pair of three-point victories before falling to Baldwin Wallace’s Joe Belford by the score of 3-1 at 285 pounds.
Justin Patus (Sr., Sachem, N.Y.) was also a placewinner at 157 pounds after finishing fifth. He went 1-1 in the championship bracket before moving to the wrestleback bracket where he tallied two pins and two major decision victories. Patus later earned fifth by defeating Sean Secru of RIT, 9-3.
Other Laker wrestlers to pick up two wins on the day included Kevin Ramkishun (So., Queens, N.Y.) at 125 pounds and Maxx Stratton (Jr., Accord, N.Y.) at 157 pounds.
Oswego State closes out competition for the semester next Saturday when it hosts Ithaca at 4:30 p.m.
