ITHACA, N.Y. – The Oswego State wrestling team sits in 15th-place among the 15 teams at the New York State Championships hosted by Cornell.
A short-handed Laker squad won just two matches in the main brackets and no one was able to advance to the second day of the tournament.
Brandon Heffernan (Sr., Martville, N.Y.) earned a 6-2 win over Adam Huguine of RIT in his second match, but had his tournament ended in the next round, while Justin Patus (So., Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) suffered the same fate after a narrow 4-3 win over NYU’s Sam Friedfeld in his second match.
In B-bracket action, the Lakers were led by Denvol Haye (Fr., Hempstead, N.Y.) who finished fourth at 141 pounds.
After an opening loss, Haye grabbed a 5-2 victory and then a 4-1 win over teammate Austin Berube (Fr., Williamsville, N.Y.) in the consolation semifinals. Haye was pinned by a Cornell wrestler in the third-place match. Berube opened his day with a 7-4 win before getting pinned late in his match with the eventual champion, Ryan Ponte of Columbia. Berube was then beaten by Haye to leave him in a tie for fifth.
Quamaine Thomas (Fr., Uniondale, N.Y.) also added 6-3 and 9-4 wins before settling in a tie for fifth at 133 pounds as the other Laker to get wins on the mat in B-bracket action.
The Lakers will have the first of their two home matches on Wednesday night when they host Brockport at 7 p.m. in an Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference dual.
