Oswego State Wrestling Hangs Tough In 27-10 Loss To #4-Ranked Ithaca

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State wrestling team was tied with fourth-ranked Ithaca at 10-10 heading into the final four matches, but the Bombers won each bout to hand the Lakers a 27-10 loss Saturday in Oswego. The loss dropped Oswego State to 1-1 in dual competition this season, while Ithaca remained unbeaten at 7-0.

The Bombers started the dual match with wins at 125 and 133 pounds by the scores of 5-3 and 2-1, respectively, to take a 6-0 lead. Chris Payne cut the deficit in half for the Lakers when he posted a 1-0 win at 141 pounds over Junior Amazan. Amazan fought to record a takedown late in the third period, but was never able to gain the advantage before the final horn sounded.

Ithaca responded with a 15-2 major decision win by Blaine Woszczak, the nation’s fifth-ranked wrestler in the 149-pound weight class, to put the Bombers ahead 10-3. However, Oswego State responded with a major decision of its own when Nick Rodgers won his bout at 157 pounds by the score of 14-1 to pull the Lakers back to within three points.

Oswego State knotted the score at 10-10 after the 165-pound match as Marc Collins posted a 6-4 victory against David Foley. The bout score was even at four when Collins recorded a late takedown for the win.

In a battle of nationally-ranked 174-pounders, the Bombers’ David Priest (fifth) and the Lakers’ Cameron Mills (seventh) battled to a 1-1 tie after a late escape by Mills, but Priest earned the riding time point for the 2-1 win. Ithaca went onto record a pair of major decisions at 184 pounds, 17-7, and 197 pounds, 12-3, to clinch the victory. Matt Mahon, ranked fourth nationally, closed out the match with a pin in 1:14 at 285 pounds to give the Bombers the 27-10 win.

The match was also a Takedown Cancer event to raise funds for the Adam Frey Foundation, which is a non-profit organization formed by Adam Frey, a former Cornell wrestler, to give comfort to and provide enjoyment for those receiving treatment for cancer.

Oswego State returns to action at the Wilkes Open on Tuesday, Dec. 28.
