Fishing Reports for July 31, 2020

Lake Ontario report
After a couple days of west winds, conditions have settled down on the lake. Look for salmon in 150-300 feet of water with spoons and flasher/fly combinations working well. Brown trout have been active in more shallow water and bass are taking jigs and crankbaits in shallow depths.

According to Capt. Troy Creasy of High Adventure Sportfishing:
The wind continued to blow but we did manage to get out Thursday and grab a handful of fish under very tough conditions. The temperature was really deep, the current and winds were really strong but our guests hung tough and put a few in the net. I’m certain things will improve as the winds calm down on Friday.

Oswego River report:
The water flow has been up and down all week between 1,000 – 2,300 cfs. The current flow is 1,170 cfs. Anglers are continuing to look for walleye using stickbaits and jigs along the river. Bass have also been active taking crayfish and tube jigs.

Notice: Brookfield Renewable’s Varick Hydroelectric Station on the Oswego River will be out of service until approximately September 1, 2020 while electrical equipment is upgraded. During this time flow through the Varick Hydroelectric Station will be stopped and all river flow will be released at the NYS Dam known as Varick Dam into the natural river channel below the dam. Please be advised that during this time flow in the natural river channel could be significantly greater than when the hydroelectric station is operational.

Salmon River report:
Activity on the river has been fairly quiet. Temperatures have been more seasonable the last few days as we had a break from the 90 degree days. The current water flow at the dam is 185 cfs with 244 cfs at Pineville. As we head into August, those anglers on the river are finding a few bass.

Oneida Lake report:
Anglers are finding walleye in both shallow and deeper water. Trolling and jigging in deeper water has been especially productive. Blade baits and spinner baits are working well. Bass are taking stickbaits and jigs in the shallow water although a bit spotty and anglers are finding a few pickerel in this depth.

Sandy Pond report:
There is not a lot of activity on the pond this time of year but anglers are finding walleye using stickbaits and jigs. Look for bass along the weed beds with spinnerbaits and rubber worms. Large minnows are taking a few northern pike.
