Oswego Town Historical Society Says Thanks For Making Dr. Walker Ceremony A Success

To the Editor:

The trustees of the Oswego Town Historical Society wish to publicly thank everyone who assisted with the remarkable dedication ceremony of the Dr. Mary E. Walker Statue in the town of Oswego in May.

This event was a tremendous success and was a special moment for the greater Oswego community.

Even with the many activities and busy weekend schedules, including college graduation, more than 300 people attended the ceremony.

Many generous volunteers contributed time, goods and services in support of the program.

Civic leaders, Walker family descendants, local historians, Civil War re-enactors, school groups, historical society members, statue donors and many more, all gathered to pay respects to our nationally recognized Oswego Town native.

Dr. Walker was a pioneer female physician, Civil War surgeon, dress reformer, women’s rights and equality leader.

She is the only woman ever awarded the Medal of Honor for her heroic services during the American Civil War.

Her accomplishments and sacrifices made many things possible for the present generation.

This memorial statue stands proud as a constant reminder of her achievements.

Again, the trustees thank everyone who made this lasting monument a possibility.
