Oswego Community Christian School Students Visit Oswego Hospital Lab

Fifth and Sixth graders in Mrs. Khamis’s class at the Oswego Community Christian School recently toured Oswego Hospital’s laboratory after studying the body’s immune system and diseases. At the lab, staff members provided an overall tour of the facility, which is divided into several departments including blood bank, hematology and chemistry, among others. In several departments they were able to take part in hands-on learning activities.

In pathology, using a dual microscope the students saw a normal cell and then a cancer cell. In chemistry they saw how the robotic arm and track worked. Oswego Hospital’s lab features a state-of-the-art automotive system that moves specimens along a track, stopping them at stations where specific tests on that sample need to be performed.

In microbiology, they did cultures of their own hands. Staff member Nancy Blais went to the school the day before the student visit to get the cultures of their hands. Back in the lab they were then able to see what was growing on their hands before and after hand washing.

Along with this activity, they were able to view what both red and white blood cells look like.

In addition, the students were able to see what bacteria looks like as it grows into various forms including, normal, throat culture, strep throat, staph and e coli.
