OSWEGO, NY – It’s not yet Halloween, but it’s starting to look a lot like Christmas. A troupe of volunteers is working to put the finishing touches on the 2016 Oswego Christmas Tree Lighting and Holiday Expo.
The annual holiday celebration will kick off at 9 a.m. Nov. 26 and run until 10 p.m.
Jennifer Losurdo of the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau and her crew have a plethora of events scheduled for the day-long celebration.
Santa Claus will make the trip south to Oswego and will be at City Hall from 2:30 to 5 p.m. The tree lighting will take place at 6 p.m. There are new lights for the tree and a new star on top.
In the meantime, there will be plenty of activities going on.
Hailey Starr, the Balloon Lady, will be making holiday creations for the youngsters. CNY Stables will offer horse and carriage rides from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. All of Oswego’s museums will be open for tours. And, new this year, ice skating will held from noon to 10 p.m. in a rink at the Second Street side of Civic Plaza.
The expo will be held from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Oswego Armory at YMCA with 48 vendors including Subway inside. There will be a ‘make and take’ gifts activity for kids.
“The expo is being put on by Oswego Kiwanis Club. All of the proceeds will be donated to next year’s event,” Losurdo said.
Subway is the food vendor for expo. Phat Kat Foods and Willy Billy Bobs BBQ as well as Big Kahuna Party Rentals will be in Civic Plaza with popcorn.
There will be free raffles at Armory.
Toys for Tots will be at The Elks Club from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. They will be doing the Day of Sharing.
“The Christmas Parade starts at 2 p.m. at the Oswego County Humane Society, located at 29 W. Seneca St. Well-behaved animals (on a leash) are welcome to be in the parade,” Losurdo told Oswego County Today.
The route will end at Civic Plaza in time to meet and greet the Jolly Old Elf.
The Oswego Players will perform a holiday skit on stage.
There will be music from noon – 6 p.m., donated by Just Push Play Productions.
From 6-8 p.m., Kay Burke will be on stage singing. Burke is a singer who travels all over during the holidays to sing to soldiers.
The mayor will do an opening speech around 5:30 p.m.
Kevin Caraccioli will read The Night Before Christmas on the stage at 5:55 p.m. prior to the lighting, slated for 6 p.m.
Informational flyers will go out to the schools at the end of this month, Losurdo said.
Coloring contest sheets and story sheets will also be distributed in the area schools at the end of October or first week of November, she added.
The coloring and story contest winners will be announced on stage.
Gift cards, from Wal-Mart, will be awarded to the winners.
Hot cocoa and cookies will be available in City Hall while waiting for Santa, provided by the Oswego Lions Club from 2:30 to 5 p.m.
The Oswego Rotary Club will provide hot cocoa and cookies outside, at 6 p.m., during the tree lighting ceremony.
“Santa is scheduled to arrive at 2:30 p.m. at Civic Plaza; he will go inside to visit with kids. Each kid will get a goody bag,” Losurdo said.
Other activities include a magic show from 3-4 p.m.; members of the Oswego Players in Dickens costumes walking around downtown and they will perform a skit on stage; and Edge Artistic Dance Studio will also perform on stage.
