Owens Successfully Bids for Agriculture, Armed Services Committees

Submitted by Cong. Bill Owens (D-Plattsburgh)

WASHINGTON – Congressman Bill Owens announced today that he will continue to serve on the House Agriculture Committee and the House Armed Services Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives for the 112th Congress.

“Agriculture is a major driver of New York’s economy, and I am pleased with the opportunity to once again represent the needs of Upstate dairy farmers, foresters and other growers across the region,” said Owens. “I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to ensure that family farmers in Upstate New York have every opportunity to succeed in tough economic times and strengthen their operations for future generations.”

“Further, Fort Drum is a source of community pride and the largest employer in New York’s 23rd Congressional district,” Owens continued. “The installation is critical to both national security and the North Country economy, and I will continue my efforts to strengthen and maintain Fort Drum so the Army’s 10th Mountain Division can remain as effective and efficient in the War on Terror as it is today. “

The House Agriculture Committee’s jurisdiction includes farming, dairy, forestry, renewable energy, commodity exchanges, economic development, broadband access, nutrition, and water conservation. Membership on this Committee will give Congressman Owens a voice on the 2012 Farm Bill, a revision of American agriculture policy Congress undertakes every five years, as well as other issues. The House Armed Services Committee oversees various operations of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps, with jurisdiction over military issues including funding for installations like Fort Drum, family programs like housing and educational benefits, as well as major procurement initiatives affecting small businesses and defense suppliers in Upstate New York.

Owens was also named today to two subcommittees within the House Armed Services Committee. The House Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness oversees military readiness, training, logistics, maintenance, military construction, military installation, family housing issues, and Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC). The House Armed Services Subcommittee on Air and Land Forces holds jurisdiction over the Army, Air Force, National Guard, deep strike bombers, and ammunition programs. The House Agriculture Committee has not yet assigned its members to subcommittees.

Owens will no longer serve on the House Homeland Security Committee, but will remain engaged in Homeland Security issues that affect Upstate New York.

“While not officially on the committee, I plan to continue my work to maintain a safe and secure northern border that also serves to bolster economic development,” Owens added.
