OSWEGO — Three days of roller derby action at the first-ever Triple-D Tournament literally came down to the last seconds, as the Oz Roller Girls rallied for a thrilling 130-126 win over the Ithaca Bluestockings to gain the title.
After a back-and-forth matchup, Oz called timeout with 40 seconds left, trailing a fast and talented Bluestockings squad 126-117. But speedy and elusive Oz jammer Masso-Kiss-Tic Mandy, behind a blocking line of Certified Public Assassin, Insane Assilem, J-Rock-It and Rock’Em Sock’Em pulled off an amazing comeback on the final jam.
Masso-Kiss-Tic Mandy got the jump on the start and, when the Bluestockings jammer was called for a back-blocking penalty, the Oz fivesome seized the opportunity. As the Crisafulli Rink crowd noise built to a fever pitch, Masso-Kiss-Tic Mandy made three passes of the Ithaca pack, gaining 13 points, and called off the jam as the Oz bench and fans went delirious.
Masso-Kiss-Tic Mandy led Oz scorers with 48 points, followed by J-Rock-It with 43, Certified Public Assassin with 23 and Abbie Cadaver with 16. The Bluestockings had the bout’s high scorer, Gunder and Lightning, post 74 points, with Nuclear WinterCourse (27) and Delicate Flower (14) also in double figures.
The comeback win over the tough Bluestockings was the third victory in three days for Oz in the Triple D Tournament. In the opening match, the local first-year league built a big first-half lead to construct a 222-137 victory over the Rockin’ Rural Roller Girls Nurse Ratchets.
In the second round, Oz played a consistent jamming, blocking and defensive game to top the Albany All-Stars B Team 193-74 to clinch a place in the championship. The Bluestockings claimed the other slot with an impressive 138-56 win over Team Triple-D-Licious, who had scored a 287-55 win over the Poison Pixies in the opening round.
In the consolation match, Triple-D-Licious topped the Albany All-Stars Bs in a tight 126-117 match. The Poison Pixies defeated the Nurse Ratchets 253-106 to claim fifth place.
