OSWEGO — The Oz Roller Girls will look to extend their three-game winning streak when they host a roller derby doubleheader Saturday, June 11, in Oswego’s Crisafulli Rink.
The Oz Roller Girls will host the Hellbilly Heartbreakers from Enchanted Mountain Derby in the evening’s headline bout. An intraleague bout will follow, featuring the Nukes of Hazzard trying to avenge last month’s loss to the Port City Sirens. Doors will open at 5 p.m., with opening whistle at 6 p.m.
The Oz Roller Girls enter the bout with a 3-1 record in their debut season. They have benefited from a balanced attack, with five jammers — Masso-Kiss-Tic Mandy, Certified Public Assassin, Abbie Cadaver, J-Rock-It and Crushed Red Pepper — showing ability to rack up points behind multiple blocking lines who continue to work well together.
Oz has locked up in two scrimmages with the Enchanted Mountain Derby skaters from Olean and expect another tough bout. Despite losses to the Queen City Roller Derby Baby Brawlers (by one point) and the Little Steel Derby Girls, the Hellbilly Hearbreakers will come in ready to battle and have fun.
The Nukes-Sirens bout will allow any of the league’s skaters who have met skill qualifications to participate, beyond the 14 top players on Oz’s travel team. Last month’s intraleague bout showed a more relaxed, fun-loving atmosphere than the intense headline bout that went down to the final jam as Oz edged Watertown’s Black River Rollers 185-183.
A portion of the bout proceeds will benefit the Oswego County Hospice which offers a comprehensive program of home care for terminally ill persons who are no longer receiving aggressive or curative medical care.
The Oz Roller Girls are still looking for a variety of volunteers to help with various areas of the organization’s activities — from skaters to referees, scorekeepers to security.
